The Castle Bowling Green is more than land. For generations it has been part of Woodstock's shared life — a place connected to the neighbourhood and its people.
Woodstock has a unique history. During apartheid, when most neighbourhoods were forcibly separated, Woodstock remained one of the few places where people from different backgrounds continued living side by side — because residents resisted forced removals.
Places like the Bowling Green became part of that story — spaces where people could gather and mix in ways that were becoming rare elsewhere in the country. That spirit still runs through Woodstock today.
Healthy neighbourhoods need shared places where people can meet, connect, and feel part of their community. Cities are not only buildings and roads — they are also the places where communities live their daily lives. Good planning recognises this.
This case is not about stopping development. It is about making sure decisions affecting Woodstock happen properly, transparently, and with real community participation.
The matter is brought by 19 Woodstock residents and is entirely volunteer-driven.
If you cannot buy a ticket, sharing this page or showing up in court still helps. Woodstock has always been a neighbourhood where people show up for each other.
If we don't defend the ruling in court, it falls away. In simple terms: if we don't fight for it, we lose it.
"Who actually supports this space?"
When the case first appeared before Judge Nziweni, this question was raised. It matters — because courts look not only at legal arguments, but also at whether the community truly stands behind something.
Buying a raffle ticket helps fund the legal defence. But sharing this page, speaking to neighbours, and showing up in court also count.
Every ticket bought, every share, and every person in the courtroom helps answer that question.
A fitting moment for the community to stand behind something that has long been part of Woodstock. The hearing and the draw fall on the same day.
